beneath your skin

Where does the soul take sanctuary?
I have searched far and wide.
I return from my pilgrimage
empty handed-
every time.

I have asked my doctor,
who told me it was somewhere beneath the skin.
But after peeling back the epidermal layers
I've realized-
I cannot win.
